The Most Important Lesson
The most important lesson I’ve learned as a mother is to create happy memories.
In the years when we were nursing my disabled son, living on a bridge between life and death, our life as a family was very limited.
He required 2 adults with him at all times, which meant that even if we just ran out of milk, the whole family had to pile into the car with our paramedic supplies.
In a ten minute drive, we would have to resuscitate him twice on average.
My daughters, from the ages of 10 years and 6 years, would help us, holding the oxygen over his face whilst we suctioned his paralysed throat.
My biggest concern, apart from keeping him alive, was how to create a happy childhood for them whilst they coped with the stress.
What could I do to create a balance? To shine the light of joy into the darkness of their suffering?
And that’s when I made it my mission as a mother to create happy memories together. To keep taking them on adventures and travelling to different cultures and sacred sites.
8 years later, here are the Du Boulay tribe, still adventuring, still creating happy memories.
Because when you find yourself in that dark cave of fear and pain again, it’s your happy memories that will help to create the light that will lead you to hope.
What are the memories that you treasure? Write them in the comments and tag the people you share them with to keep shining the light.
With my love and blessings this Samhain
